Many philosophers believe that a correct government can make a strong society. However, these philosophers do not agree on what form of government is the most â€Å"correct†. English philosopher John Locke believed that Man is inherently moral and that the purpose for government is to grant the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to its people. Another philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, however, held the belief that mankind is naturally evil and that society needs an absolute central authority to contain this evilness and grant its people with the common protection. Hobbes believes that in a state of nature, when there are no rules and everyone is granted equal power, the inherent evil impulses of Man are exposed. In society everyone would be constantly against another so th at the state of nature will be an eternal state of warfare. In a similar design, William Golding also portrays this same idea. In Chapter Four, Golding describes the mental thoughts of Jack, a savage who is obsessed with power after killing his first pig on the secluded island: â€Å"His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink† (Golding 70). The violence from killing the boys’ first pig is the first yet very important step on the road toward savagery. Jack’s exhilaration disables him to think about anything other than the excitement from his first kill, including the act to maintain the essential signal fire for the common good. This act of murder brings satisfaction and a sense of superiority to Jack, proving Hobbes’ statement that human nature is destructive and violent in fulfilling Man’s inherent, constant desires. Grace Nichols is a Caribbean poet Essay Grace Nichols is a Caribbean poet. She was born in Georgetown in 1950 and grew up in a small village on the Guyanese coast. In 1977 she moved to the United Kingdom as an act of independence and to experience a different type of culture. She wanted to escape the Caribbeans long history of violence, invasions and slavery. Grace came to Britain seeking an identity, however through her poetry she shows that she will always be proud of her heritage and that her heart lies in the Caribbean. The issue of cultural identity is very important to her, as she feels torn between two cultures. She is searching for something which feels natural to her. Caribbean life is natural to her however, after spending so much time in the UK, going back home would be strange. The three poems link together sharing memories of childhood in the Caribbean and memories of adulthood in the U. K. The poems follow a cycle of life. The first talks of childhood- Praise song for my mother, the second of adulthood- Fat black woman, and the third, of death- Tropical death. The language she uses represents the attitude of the people from the country. For example, Creole is a free-speaking dialect- not restricted by punctuation or spelling. This represents the Caribbean and its laidback, un-restricted attitude whereas Standard English has to be carefully constructed and its restricted format represents the English culture. There is a good example of the varied dialects in her writing in her poem Fat Black woman. An example of Creole is and de weather so cold. But she later goes on to say frozen thin mannequins which is an example of Standard English. Praise song for my mother shows positive colours of the Caribbean all the way through. It uses images to compare her mother with features of the Caribbean. The poem admires her mother for bringing her up and loving and caring for her. She later admires her for giving her freedom and letting her go. She is not inhibited or stifled. She is natural with her feelings and emotions. Standing alone is giving a positive image also. The layout of the poem resembles childhood. Three simple stanzas all beginning with you were. The poem is full of colourful Caribbean references. It has a different structure to the other two poems as it has almost half the amount of words. She has also fused her childhood memories with her adulthood, which emphasizes her cultural struggle. The poem is written from a childs point of view. Grace Nichols poetry shows clearly her search for her cultural identity. The negative imagery of the U. K and positive of the Caribbean shows she prefers her home country and feels more comfortable there. Fat black Woman is a poem that attacks the stereotypical views of the English people. The title itself is an attack on the stereotypical image of a Caribbean woman. The poem shows a fat black woman who goes shopping to find that all the clothes are too small for her. As she enters the shops, the sales girls frown upon her. The poem gives a negative view of the U. K from the very beginning as it starts Shopping in London winter, a real drag for the fat black woman. This immediately gives a negative view in terms of weather but she continues to give negative views when she moves on to colour. London is made to sound unwelcoming and bad weather is a recurring image throughout all of the poems. Nothing bright and billowing to flow like breezy sunlight is a line that suggests that in the Caribbean there would be colourful clothes as it is a bright and colourful place; not dull and stormy like the U. The fat black woman feels she is getting nowhere, like she will never fit in. She is still confused as to why she came to Britain à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" all this journeying and journeying for what? On the surface this line appears to relate to the shopping trip, going from store to store. However, what she is really trying to say is that traveling all the way to Britain did not get her anywhere and if anything, made her unhappier. To Nichols, the British are cold and impolite and their smiles are false. Look at the frozen thin mannequins fixing her with grin. Use of assonance here creates a cold, sharp tone. Grace Nichols also uses ambiguity in this poem. For example, she writes the choice is lean- nothing much beyond size 14. This line is referring to the variety of clothes as well as stating that the stereotypical British woman has a lean body. It also shows again the stereotypical views of the English, as clothes beyond a size fourteen are hard to get because they make their clothes for thin people. This joke at the end is written to make you feel sorry for the fat black woman. Tropical death is another poem about a fat black woman who wants a Caribbean funeral, not an English one. She describes an English funeral as a polite hearse withdrawal to show that the emotions are controlled and stifled whereas a Caribbean funeral is considered a celebration. We know this by the line a brilliant tropical death yes, written in Creole. No quiet jerk tear wiping is a quote that shows she doesnt want people to hold back at her funeral also, monosyllabic words describing a stereotypical Brit at a funeral creates a mocking effect. The line some brawl represents the Caribbean lifestyle. It shows how she wants a fuss made at her funeral-some excitement at the celebration of her life. First night third night nine night, repetition here emphasizes how long she wants the wake to go on for; also it imitates the rhythmical beat of the Caribbean steel drums and of a heart. The lines are also shortened, making them stand out and again, creating a slow rhythm. As Romeo is banished, he cannot see Juliet as he cant step foot inside of Verona. In conclusion, i think that this scene turns the play around and it does cause the death of Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet end up committing suicide because since Romeo is banished they send him a letter but only the letter never gets there so when he finds out Juliet is dead he goes back to see her and kills himself. When Juliet wakes up she sees Romeo and kills herself all because she wanted to escape to be with Romeo and not to marry Paris. I think the play is more than just a fight scene because it also offers the turning point in the play and also gives a reason for Romeo to be banished so he is in the right place for they deaths to happen at the end.

In an initial bifurcation that invariably led to misunderstandings, sexual difference became both the watchword for New French Feminism, with its emphasis on, and celebration of, essential differences between men and women, and also the working notion for feminists looking to Jacques Lacans rereading of Freud for a more complex account of subjectivity and sexual identity than any then available. One: The Avant-Garde and Its Imaginary 3 I would like to look at some of the presuppositions of one contemporary avant-garde movement from the point of view of these new approached based on Freudian and Lacanian theory because I think they can illuminate some of the difficulties often found in the meeting of political and avant-garde practice. The Imaginary Signifier (Christian Metz) The imaginary is also what has to be rediscovered precisely in order to avoid being swallowed up by it: a never ending task. At the centre of Christian Metzs discussion of the psychoanalytic constitution on the cinematic signifier, he warns that the film which would aim to be a film of intervention must take into consideration the cinematic signifiers higher degree of imaginariness in comparison to, for example, the theatre. Metz emphasizes that what is characteristic of the cinema is not the imaginary that it may happen to represent, it is the imaginary that it is from the start. But even more fundamental is the way the cinematic signifier combines presence and absence- it is more there than almost any other medium (because of its density of perceptual registers) and less there at the same time (because it is always only a replica of what is no longer there). This combination of presence and absence exactly describes the characteristic functioning of the Imaginary according to Lacan: the ego is constituted by an image, that is, something that is a reflection (which is there) of the body (which is not really there in the mirror). 12 Thus the cinematic signifier is imaginary in its very constitution as a signifier. The purpose of this paper is to do just that, by giving evidence for and against the topic, by looking into ways that some families adjust and how others dont. This paper looks into claims that go along with the assumption of abuse stemming from a home with mental illness and provides statistics against it, and in support of parents being able to deal with these kind s of difficulties. Much research has been done in the area of effects of mental illness in the family. One of which was an article by authors Swartz, Swanson, Hiday, Borum, Wagner, and Burns (1998) that suggests that the presence of a mental illness are often times associated with serious violent acts, according to the Violence and Severe Mental Illness article. It explains how adults with psychiatric problems often times self medicate with alcohol or other substances instead of regularly taking their prescribed medication. The medication noncompliance, substance abuse, and overall mental illnesses create a huge problem within a family. Individuals in this position cannot take care of themselves; much less keep a family healthy. With all the stress stated previously, often times a parent may become violent as a way of coping. It was found that alcohol or other drug abuse problems  combined with poor adherence to medication may signal a higher  risk of violent behavior among persons with severe ment al illness (Violence and Severe Mental Illness). Within this type of a situation children become withdrawn, scared, and depending on the age may begin acting out themselves. There has been other research, like this, that shows a correlation between violent and neglectful homes and parents with a mental illness. These tend to aim more towards the lack of proper medication and instead, the substitute of alcohol or other drugs by the parent. One such article by Danson , Gold, Barreira, and Fisher (2008) indicates that as unhealthy as the mentally ill parent is, the child is as equally effected, if not more so. Research by Danson et al. (2008) revealed that situations with severe substance  abuse by a parent,  there is a high recurrence of less frequent parent-child  contact. The more a parent turns to substances to self medicate, there is less and less contact with their children. This is where most people draw the conclusion that a parent with a mental illness, results in a negl ectful or abusive home. Studies have shown that this results in lifelong problems in kids, such as a feeling of isolation, separation anxiety, boundary issues, anger, and depression. Children need their parents to be present. Even if struggling with a mental illness, a child needs their parent involved in their lives. Although there is much research that views adults with mental illnesses as precursors to neglectful and abusive parents, there is a great deal of studies that argue against it. Rethink is a severe mental illness foundation, aiming to assist those suffering, family who are affected, as well as a goal of clearing up any misconceptions glued to this illness. Research shows that these families have discussions about understanding that a parent is mentally ill and acknowledge how this is going to affect the other members of the family. News ways of taking care of each individual are discussed and boundaries are drawn, so that certain people arent being taken advantage of or acting outside of their familial role. Lear ning a new way to deal with old unhealthy family patterns also gives family members a leg up. The cycle of harmful family habits can be broken and new communications started. From these two viewpoints, a conclusion must be drawn that whether or not a family is going to pull through a difficult time as this, it depends on the individuals and the amount of assistance they receive as well as the amount of effort they are willing to put into making their family function. It is clear that mentally ill parents have a tough burden to work through. Living with a mental illness is difficult, and many individuals have a tough time functioning and finding a balance. Because some have a hard time making it, their families suffer. Children may be abused and neglected by a parent who isnt in their right state of mind, but studies show that this is not the norm. Jihad and the Crusades Every great historical moment, leader and religion is focused around a uniting influence. Saladin, a great Kurdish Muslim warrior during the time of the Crusades, and the Muslim armies employed the lesser, or violent jihad to fortify support and power in the Holy Lands. Throughout the eleventh and twelfth centuries the term â€Å"jihad† was used in several different contexts with varying meanings and intentions. Saladin used a favorable definition and interpretation of Jihad in order to unite the Muslims and create a massive army to defend Islam from the Christian Crusaders. In order to completely understand the word, its origins, and its uses, the original passages from the Qur’an must be analyzed and interpreted. Islam, as a faith, is supposed to be peaceful and preaches inner strength. Violence of any kind is in direct contradiction to the teachings of Mohammad and the Islamic faith. The only exception in using violence is in the case of a declared jihad, or holy war for the protection of Islam. The reasons for this exception for violence and its proper uses are controversial in that there is little reassurance that Allah would support or deny support for a war. However it is clear that the meaning and use of jihad was manipulated during the Crusades for the benefit of Islam, as it can be argued that Saladin fought not for Allah, but out of anger towards the Christians and to protect and grow his own wealth and lands. For example an independent insurance agent, non-MetLife, must complete 16 hours of state mandated continuing education classes each year whereas a MetLife agent must comply with state regulations as well as MetLife’s annual continuing education courses. Thats where they found food and loaded up the ship and left again. Then they got to the east coast, they made sure they didnt go as south as Florida, where the Spanish ruled. While he was going up the coast he saw indians excited dancing on the beach. He went to the beach and met the indians, and that beach happened to be Kitty Hawk. Giovanni da Varrazano kept on going until he found a natural harbor, when he saw fire and landed. He sent a large canoe to the land, except the boat got stuck and Varrazano sent his best swimmer to get them. The swimmer rescued the canoe, but he drowned.
