Explain the dramatic significance of Act 3, Scene 1. Essay Example

Explain the dramatic significance of Act 3, Scene 1. Essay Romeo and Juliet is a play about two star-crossed lovers from Verona both from two different families but it isnt as simple as that, the two families hold an ancient feud against each other. The prologue tells us quite a bit about whats going to happen during the play. It tells us that two star-crossed lovers will take their life A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life, and also that when they are dead their parents will end their family grudge, Doth with their death bury their parents strife. The two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are enemies of each other throughout the play because of this ancient family feud they have numerous fights about this throughout the play. This particular play is a tragedy because the two main characters do die during the play. During the first two Acts, quite a lot happens as Romeo and Juliet meet at a masked ball and then realise that they are worst enemies, My only love sprung from my only hate. They fall in love almost instantly and arrange to meet up and get married. They were both ready to give up their family name for each other, Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or if thou wilt not be but sworn my love. And Ill no longer be a Capulet. Act three provides a turning point in the play because if Romeo hadnt have been banished for killing Tybalt then Juliet wouldnt have had to fake her death to see him and keep out of marrying Paris then none of them would have died. In this scene, Romeo is banished causing dramatic effects on the rest of the play and resulting in Romeo and Juliet both killing them selves at the end of the play. In addition, we lose two other characters during this scene both during a fight over both the families as a result Mercutio and Tybalt are tragically killed Mercutio by Tybalt and Tybalt by Romeo. Therefore, by the end of this scene both Mercutio and Tybalt are both killed and Romeo has been banished from Verona. At the beginning of the scene it is a very hot day in Verona and everyone is hot and on edge. Benvolio is saying to Mercutio that they should leave because if they were to meet up with the Capulets then they shall not escape a fight And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl, for now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring. However, Mercutio is always ready to be angry and always up for a fight so he really isnt bothered. When Tybalt arrives, Benvolio seems angry that he hasnt escaped them because of Mercutio arguing with him over fighting, By my head, here comes the Capulets. But Mercutios reaction is totally the opposite of Benvolios he doesnt seem to care that Tybalt has arrived By my heel, i care not. He also takes the fun out of Benvolio by saying that meaning also he shall not move. Mercutio provokes the situation by saying that if he wants a word he can have a fight aswell And but one word with one of us? Couple it with something make it a word and a blow. At this point in th e play it relates back to the beginning of the play where many fights go on and the prince Escalus threatens them with severe penalties. At this point in the play, the audience will feel quite scared for the characters because if they do break out into a fight then the severe penalties will be brought in and something will happen to one or more of the characters. When Tybalt sees Romeo approaching, he says to Mercutio, here comes my man. Tybalt wanted a word with Romeo. When Romeo arrives, he says to Romeo that he cant say anything more positive about him than that he is a villain. The reason that i have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting. Romeo was saying that he has to love him for Juliet. When Tybalt challenges Romeo to a fight, Romeo backs away, I do protest I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise Till thou shalt know the reason of my love. And so, good Capulet, which name i tender as dearly as mine own, be satisfied. Here Romeo was saying to Tybalt that no he wont fight him and he will never guess the reason why he loves him so dearly, then he tries to stay out of it. Mercutio seems shocked by the way Romeo acts towards Tybalt and then challenges Tybalt to a fight Tybalt, you rat-catcher, will you walk? During the beginning of the play Tybalt is portrayed as an aggressive person because of the way he acted at the masked ball when he recognized the Montagues, and it nearly broke out into a fight but Lord Capulet insisted they shouldnt. Later in the play, he is killed by Romeo because Tybalt killed Mercutio Romeos friend. Tybalt seems like a fighter and not a talker because as soon as he sees the enemy he is ready to fight. When Tybalt and Mercutio had that fight Tybalt didnt really want to fight him but Mercutio pushed him into it Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk? Tybalt is just loyal to his family and will do anything for them but also he can be a villain. Mercutio is dashing and very popular and on the Montagues side but not by blood he is Romeos friend, we find out that he can be quite a joker too. When Mercutio and Tybalt start to fight Romeo pleads with Benvolio to stop them Draw Benvolio; beat down their weapons. Then Romeo ends up in the middle of them; the audience must feel very worried that Romeo may be killed at this point but luckily, he doesnt. However, Mercutio does get hurt and is lying on the floor and says, didnt Tybalt get hurt but no he didnt he ran off with his men straight after so that he wouldnt be caught by the prince. As Mercutio is hurt he calls Romeo a villain and tells him to get a surgeon. Mercutios cut only looked like a scratch but it was very deep and painful so as a result he passed away. As Mercutio is not a Capulet neither a Montague before he dies he curses both families both the Capulets and the Montagues A plague, o both your houses! Some theorists believe that Mercutio was killed off in this scene because he was too vibrant a character and they believed that he would divert the audiences attention off Romeo and Juliet i do agree with this as Mercutio is always about and always part of most things. Mercutio is involved in numerous scenes he was involved in most of the fights and also he was involved with the ball, Mercutio is also mostly around when Benvolio is around to fill the gaps between the fights and the loves scenes. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is a very quiet character and very upset because Rosaline doesnt return his love he feels for her. He felt very strongly about the feud at the beginning of the play as he hated the Capulets. When he met Juliet, he seemed to be a lot happier and when he found out that Juliet was a Capulet he was shocked but felt differently towards them instead of hating them so much. When Romeo finds out that Mercutio is dead Tybalt turns up and he gets so angry he kills Tybalt. Romeo could have prevented at least one death by not going to kill Tybalt because that is the turning point in the play where most things start to go wrong because as a result he gets banished by the prince witch leads to more complications.O, i am fortunes fool. Here Romeo is saying that fate was playing around with him. In Shakespeares time people were great believers in fate because at this time people believed in witchcraft and myths. Benvolios function in this scene is to be there to try get Mercutio out of the street and warn the audience that a fight is about to break out by warning Mercutio. He is also there to help Mercutio after he has been stabbed and to inform Romeo of Mercutios death. Then after this Benvolio is not needed no more because Romeo has been banished so he is not there for him and so not needed. In addition, Benvolio doesnt know about Juliet so he cant be part of the rest as there is no need. When the Prince and the Montagues and Capulets arrive on the scene, the prince asks what was going on. Benvolio tries to cover Romeo as best as he can but it doesnt work therefore the prince punishes him by banishing him from Verona. As Romeo is banished, he cannot see Juliet as he cant step foot inside of Verona. In conclusion, i think that this scene turns the play around and it does cause the death of Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet end up committing suicide because since Romeo is banished they send him a letter but only the letter never gets there so when he finds out Juliet is dead he goes back to see her and kills himself. When Juliet wakes up she sees Romeo and kills herself all because she wanted to escape to be with Romeo and not to marry Paris. I think the play is more than just a fight scene because it also offers the turning point in the play and also gives a reason for Romeo to be banished so he is in the right place for they deaths to happen at the end.

The Future of an Illusion Essays - Optical Illusions, Free Essays

The Future of an Illusion Essays - Optical Illusions, Free Essays The Future of an Illusion Constance Penley Preface ...And is it not the case that in our civilisation the relations between the sexes are disturbed by an erotic illusion or a number of such illusions? [Sigmund Freud, The Future of an Illusion, 34] -debates about representation and sexual difference -the place of woman in classical Hollywood cinema ...they are at least symptomatic of a certain kind of theoretical approach- feminist and psychoanalytic- to the work on women and media that began in the early seventies. Xii Beginning in the early seventies sexual difference rapidly established itself as an important analytical category for many feminist theorists. In an initial bifurcation that invariably led to misunderstandings, sexual difference became both the watchword for New French Feminism, with its emphasis on, and celebration of, essential differences between men and women, and also the working notion for feminists looking to Jacques Lacans rereading of Freud for a more complex account of subjectivity and sexual identity than any then available. One: The Avant-Garde and Its Imaginary 3 I would like to look at some of the presuppositions of one contemporary avant-garde movement from the point of view of these new approached based on Freudian and Lacanian theory because I think they can illuminate some of the difficulties often found in the meeting of political and avant-garde practice. The Imaginary Signifier (Christian Metz) The imaginary is also what has to be rediscovered precisely in order to avoid being swallowed up by it: a never ending task. At the centre of Christian Metzs discussion of the psychoanalytic constitution on the cinematic signifier, he warns that the film which would aim to be a film of intervention must take into consideration the cinematic signifiers higher degree of imaginariness in comparison to, for example, the theatre. Metz emphasizes that what is characteristic of the cinema is not the imaginary that it may happen to represent, it is the imaginary that it is from the start. Basic to the constitution of the cinematic signifier is that it is absent: unlike in the theatre where real persons share the time and space of the spectator, the cinema screen is always the other scene; it is a recording and what it records is not there at the moment of its projection. But even more fundamental is the way the cinematic signifier combines presence and absence- it is more there than almost any other medium (because of its density of perceptual registers) and less there at the same time (because it is always only a replica of what is no longer there). This combination of presence and absence exactly describes the characteristic functioning of the Imaginary according to Lacan: the ego is constituted by an image, that is, something that is a reflection (which is there) of the body (which is not really there in the mirror). 12 Thus the cinematic signifier is imaginary in its very constitution as a signifier. It is also imaginary, Metz argues, because the screen reactivates the mirror stage described by Jacques Lacan (or at least the images have their power of fascination because the subject has already undergone the mirror stage). Any relation to an image is imaginary; that is, since the ego itself is constituted by images (the first being the image of the subject in the mirror) and all the rest of the images being doubles of this double, then it is impossible to separate images from this fundamental imaginary operation. Metz shifts the ground of all previous discussions of the processes of identification in film, maintaining that the primary identification is not with the characters on the screen but with the subjects own activity of looking. In other words, the spectator identifies with himself, with himself as a pure act of perception: as condition of possibility of the perceived and hence as a kind transcendental subject, anterior to every there is 14: fetishism and the primal scene, Every film is a fiction film [Metz] 14: At the level of cinema as a social institution Metz speaks of the role of the cinema spectator as essentially voyeuristic: participating in a form of scopophilia not normally sanctioned by society, we sit in the theatre in darkness and solitude looking toward the framed screen as through a keyhole. This is one of the reasons why it is so startling when

Jean Piaget Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Jean Piaget - Essay Example noted that all children develop through all these stages with a childs understanding of the world changing as a child moves from one stage to another. In his study, Piaget was able to prove that choices that people make in life are dependent on the developmental stage that a person has reached (Pressley and McCormick, 2007). This is after the psychologist proved that because children and adults think differently, the choices that people make depend on whether an individual is still a child or an adult. Certainly, Piagets theory of human development has significantly influenced the choices I have made in life. I have particularly used Piagets child intelligence and thought process to guide for pursuance of education as the ultimate means of succeeding in life. For instance, I did not take education seriously during my childhood days. To me, everything was normal because I used to think mostly in an abstract manner. In fact, I used to find it difficult going to school since I did not view education as something important in life. Such thought process continued until middle adolescent when I began to learn of the importance of education in the present day society. Piagets findings can explain the sudden change in my thought process. In this case, Piaget demonstrated that, once an individual has reached the formal operational stage, the individuals moral decision-making process is refined (Van Blerkom, 2008). Similarly, I began to realize the importance of education upon reaching at adolescent stage. Nevertheless, as much as I was aware of the importance of education, the fact that I still had childhood thinking prevented me from studying hard. However, as soon as I approached 16 years old, I realized that, for me to succeed in life I have to study hard and obtain good grades. Otherwise, my life will be a misery. My understanding of the importance of studying hard to perform well in class can be explained by Piagets developmental stage theory. In this regard, Piaget

Refugees Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Refugees - Research Paper Example This process can be dated back 3 500 years ago to the times of the Hittites, ancient Egyptians, Assyrians and Babylonians (The UN Refugee Agency, n.p). Presently the UN refugee agency’s sole purpose is to protect refugees in the midst of a war in their motherland. The 1951 Geneva Convention is the main international agreement concerning the protection of refugees. It illustrates the definition of a refugee and the rights he is entitled to whilst in the guardianship of the country which signed the Geneva Convention agreement (The UN Refugee Agency, n.p). Refugees are people who are under threat for reasons such as, political opinion, religion, race, membership of a certain movement or nationality. These individuals can not return to their home country in fear of losing their lives. In the year 2005, Palestine, Somalia, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Sierra Leone were among the leading sources of refugees (Rosenburg, n.p). Most refugees are accommodated in camps, which are usually highly concentrated with people. These camps are either built by the state or Non government organizations. These camps supply the refugees with food and the appropriate medical aid until it is safe for them to return to their own country. This can last for years and in a situation where the host country feels it will never be safe for these individuals to return home, they are resettled to another country known as the ‘third country’, which is different from their country of origin. However, refugees are rarely resettled and usually remain in their camps. As previously mentioned, the camps which refugees are settled are highly concentrated. They are also not sanitation friendly as the large number of people makes it difficult to maintain a hygienic environment. Whilst in these camps, refugees are prone to contracting many diseases. These include cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis and HIV Aids. Contagious diseases are likely to spread very fast in a refugee camp (The UN Refugee Agency, n.p). Refugees are also prone to sexual and physical violence from the guards in their camps or from individuals amongst them. This also enhances the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (Seagul, n.p). The also face problems with adjusting to the culture of the places they are relocated. In addition, it is also very difficult for them to find employment as many locals have a negative opinion about refugees. Due to the fact that they have no employment options to sustain themselves, they are prone to joining terrorist groups or other rec ruitment programs because they have no other choice. Many refugees are often put under the pressure from migrating form rural areas into urban centers of developed countries. In addition, they might not be familiar with the language and have difficulty in communication and expressing themselves. This can also lead to depression and suicide. Refugees are assisted by the government of the country which they are given asylum. They provide them with the basic necessities they require. They are also assisted by Non Governmental Organizations which are created by different charities and receive funds from donations. Volunteers also help the refugees, by bring food to the camps, teaching them the local language, giving them emotional support or giving monetary donations. Refugees can also be closely related to as homeless individuals. They have unstable housing and may require relocation at any time. They own no personal property in their place of residence. According to Hollister et al., refuges face many barriers when they are seeking for housing and are at great risk of homelessness (n.p). Most refugees are sett

Parents With Mental Illness Social Work Essay

Parents With Mental Illness Social Work Essay This paper explains the circumstances of a parent living with a mental illness and disclaims the assumption that this dilemma at all times results in abuse or neglect six articles are referenced for this paper, providing related research on the topic. Some authors provide examples of adults who live with a mental illness and the struggles to provide and nurture their family. Others support the notion that mental illness, although a difficult ailment, does not always result in an abusive or dysfunctional home. The author examines numerous claims that living with a mental illness puts a family at risk for neglect. The author maintains that this circumstance does not automatically equal abuse in a home, but rather, present hardships to overcome. Parents with Mental Illness: Arguments of an Abusive Home Many opinions conclude that mentally ill parents are not able to care for their children and often create the outcome of a neglectful home. There is a stigma out there that these children of adults with a mental illness are at risk for growing up in an abusive home. Although this may be true in certain instances, there is much research to counter this argument and provide support that a high percentage of mentally ill parents work very hard to overcome and handle their obstacles, and provide a loving and functional home. To further understand the background of the issue this topic should be looked into with great detail. The purpose of this paper is to do just that, by giving evidence for and against the topic, by looking into ways that some families adjust and how others dont. This paper looks into claims that go along with the assumption of abuse stemming from a home with mental illness and provides statistics against it, and in support of parents being able to deal with these kind s of difficulties. Much research has been done in the area of effects of mental illness in the family. One of which was an article by authors Swartz, Swanson, Hiday, Borum, Wagner, and Burns (1998) that suggests that the presence of a mental illness are often times associated with serious violent acts, according to the Violence and Severe Mental Illness article. It explains how adults with psychiatric problems often times self medicate with alcohol or other substances instead of regularly taking their prescribed medication. The medication noncompliance, substance abuse, and overall mental illnesses create a huge problem within a family. Individuals in this position cannot take care of themselves; much less keep a family healthy. With all the stress stated previously, often times a parent may become violent as a way of coping. It was found that alcohol or other drug abuse problems  combined with poor adherence to medication may signal a higher  risk of violent behavior among persons with severe ment al illness (Violence and Severe Mental Illness). Within this type of a situation children become withdrawn, scared, and depending on the age may begin acting out themselves. There has been other research, like this, that shows a correlation between violent and neglectful homes and parents with a mental illness. These tend to aim more towards the lack of proper medication and instead, the substitute of alcohol or other drugs by the parent. One such article by Danson , Gold, Barreira, and Fisher (2008) indicates that as unhealthy as the mentally ill parent is, the child is as equally effected, if not more so. Research by Danson et al. (2008) revealed that situations with severe substance  abuse by a parent,  there is a high recurrence of less frequent parent-child  contact. The more a parent turns to substances to self medicate, there is less and less contact with their children. This is where most people draw the conclusion that a parent with a mental illness, results in a negl ectful or abusive home. Studies have shown that this results in lifelong problems in kids, such as a feeling of isolation, separation anxiety, boundary issues, anger, and depression. Children need their parents to be present. Even if struggling with a mental illness, a child needs their parent involved in their lives. Although there is much research that views adults with mental illnesses as precursors to neglectful and abusive parents, there is a great deal of studies that argue against it. Rethink is a severe mental illness foundation, aiming to assist those suffering, family who are affected, as well as a goal of clearing up any misconceptions glued to this illness. Their overall conclusions are being a parent with mental illness can be both challenging and rewarding. People often stigmatize and assume that children born to people with mental illness will experience social and emotional difficulties, that they may be abused or neglected. But parents with mental illness can be good parents if they receive appropriate support (Parents with Mental Illness). This is where the argument comes in. The opposing views from earlier in the paper were accurate in the sense that it is difficult to deal with side effects of medications and many parents living with a mental illness self medicate instead. But this is not true in many instances. Numerous studies have shown that many parents dealing with this issue take the proper steps to mend themselves and their families. The main i dea of Rethink seemed to state that despite the stigma attached to psychological illnesses, these families are just as capable of having a functional relationship as those who are lucky enough not to face this obstacle. It was found that often times the family of a loved one dealing with a mental illness, is forgotten. Between all the chaos and stress of helping the hurting individual, the family takes a back seat. The family member with a mental illness is not always able to care for family and both parents tend to focus on fixing the one in pain. It is shown that many mentally ill parents are afraid to lose their children, and because of this work very hard to mend what was broken and create as peaceful of a life as they can. They are getting the help they need to be able to take care of their children. A high percentage are making their family lives thrive, not giving up and neglecting their children. There is support to show that a great number of mentally ill adults are reachin g out to appropriate support. Some of these summarized in the article included the many ways parents try to mend their family and the ways they reach out. Such as, education classes for parenting and support groups, it is important to receive help from outside support to improve the environment surrounding the family, as well as positive friendships and peer relationships. These tactics greatly contribute to helping an individual dealing with the chaos of a mental illness, become balanced again. Talking with others who understand the difficulties and reaching out to those who can help, give a parent peace of mind. And this sets them up for success. In addition to this article, Coping with Mental Illness summarizes the many outlets adults with a mental illness have to helping their children and affected family members succeed, once they are balanced themselves. Numerous instances prove that children of mentally ill parents as well as other family members in these situations do not al ways receive the care and nurturing they need. They may feel ashamed to talk about their situation with others and consequently may withdraw from relatives or friends who could help them or support them. Often unable to articulate their needs, even to themselves, these individuals frequently feel isolated and alone (Coping with Mental Illness in the Family). Its extremely difficult for a child to know exactly whats going on when their parent is breaking down, where to turn for help, or what to do to help the family. In these instances, families who have made it through and made the situation better, have reached out for help. Research shows that these families have discussions about understanding that a parent is mentally ill and acknowledge how this is going to affect the other members of the family. News ways of taking care of each individual are discussed and boundaries are drawn, so that certain people arent being taken advantage of or acting outside of their familial role. Lear ning a new way to deal with old unhealthy family patterns also gives family members a leg up. The cycle of harmful family habits can be broken and new communications started. From these two viewpoints, a conclusion must be drawn that whether or not a family is going to pull through a difficult time as this, it depends on the individuals and the amount of assistance they receive as well as the amount of effort they are willing to put into making their family function. It is clear that mentally ill parents have a tough burden to work through. Living with a mental illness is difficult, and many individuals have a tough time functioning and finding a balance. Because some have a hard time making it, their families suffer. Children may be abused and neglected by a parent who isnt in their right state of mind, but studies show that this is not the norm. Many parents have helpful resources in and outside the family. Many take on the challenge of finding the correct medication. And many work extremely hard to take care of themselves, so they can in turn take care of their family. Evidence shows, a high percentage of families with a mentally ill parent, get throug h life just fine.

The Changing Definition of Jihad Essay -- Jihad, Terrorism, Terrorists

Jihad and the Crusades Every great historical moment, leader and religion is focused around a uniting influence. Saladin, a great Kurdish Muslim warrior during the time of the Crusades, and the Muslim armies employed the lesser, or violent jihad to fortify support and power in the Holy Lands. Throughout the eleventh and twelfth centuries the term â€Å"jihad† was used in several different contexts with varying meanings and intentions. Saladin used a favorable definition and interpretation of Jihad in order to unite the Muslims and create a massive army to defend Islam from the Christian Crusaders. In order to completely understand the word, its origins, and its uses, the original passages from the Qur’an must be analyzed and interpreted. Islam, as a faith, is supposed to be peaceful and preaches inner strength. Violence of any kind is in direct contradiction to the teachings of Mohammad and the Islamic faith. The only exception in using violence is in the case of a declared jihad, or holy war for the protection of Islam. The reasons for this exception for violence and its proper uses are controversial in that there is little reassurance that Allah would support or deny support for a war. However it is clear that the meaning and use of jihad was manipulated during the Crusades for the benefit of Islam, as it can be argued that Saladin fought not for Allah, but out of anger towards the Christians and to protect and grow his own wealth and lands. In the present day the term jihad is used more and more in the press however the meaning of the word has gained an increasingly violent connotation over time. While jihad has been bastardized over time it’s origins appear to be pure and devout to the Islamic faith. The history and origins of jihad are found in the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad who died in 632 AD. Throughout the Qur’an there are several references to jihad as a personal and inner struggle to become a better person. The Islamic faith is based upon striving for a life that is worthy in God’s eyes. A personal jihad is basically the struggle to avoid temptations and stay on the right path to salvation and for God, which is what the prophet Mohammed preached throughout his life. One scholar writes, â€Å"Muslims for centuries have engaged themselves and the world in pursuit of inner jihad. Evaluation of a business code of ethics Essay

Ethical behavior from employees is the foundation for a successful business. Trevino and Nelson define ethical behavior as being, â€Å"consistent with the principles, norms, and standards of business practice that have been agreed upon by society (2007, p. 16, para. 1). A code of ethics is an example of the way a company would have employees act; an instruction manual for ethical behavior. Simply possessing a code of ethics does not guarantee ethical behavior from employees. Therefore, a code of ethics must outline consequences for violations. Employers must enforce the code as well. A code of ethics ensures that, if followed, employees will work diligently with integrity and expertise, safeguard confidential information, and do so in a professional manner. Implementing and maintaining a code of conduct and ethics creates stakeholder confidence in a multinational financial services company. MetLife is one of the largest financial services companies in the world as well as the number one life insurance company in the United States; providing services worldwide in the following areas: investments, financial planning, banking, and insurance. MetLife was formed as a mutual insurance company in 1864 in the wake of the American Civil War. The company would insure Civil War veterans against disabilities because of wartime injuries and sickness. After a rough start in the first four years and several reorganizations, the company started to focus primarily on the life insurance industry; a move that would establish MetLife as one of the largest companies in the United States. Over the span of 143 years MetLife grew significantly through acquisitions and continuing to provide superior service and support to clients. Most recently MetLife acquired American Life Insurance Company (ALICO), and provides people financial services, life insurance, health insurance, and investments, in the following counties: Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, and Pakistan. This acquisition has given MetLife a dominant spot in the global financial services market making MetLife the largest insurance company in the world. With more than 50,000 employees worldwide, management  accentuates an ethical corporate culture with a compliance department that goes above any state or federal regulations with strict compliance monitoring. Management also creates a positive working environment free of harassment in any form and develops employees with goals of creating professional relationships that last a lifetime as well as achieving high levels of sales and pay. In addition to MetLife’s code of ethics all officers, managers, and employees are must follow and obey all applicable states and federal laws, company policies, and industry regulations where they hold a license to avoid any perception of impropriety. MetLife’s Chief Executive Officer Robert Henrickson states, â€Å"For 140 years, MetLife has helped individuals and institutions build and protect their most valuable assets† (MetLife, 2005, p. 2). In accordance with this reputation, MetLife has a code of ethics in place to support these efforts with the core values integrity and honesty as the foundation of the ethical culture within the company. These core values are vital to the company achieving the MetLife vision; to build financial freedom for everyone. The code of ethics at MetLife is a voluntary code of conduct that emphasizes a duty-based ethical system. The foundation for the code is broad and encompasses the following corporate values: integrity, expertise, suitability, full disclosure, fair competition, service, brand, confidentiality, professionalism, and reputation. However, a code of ethics does not guarantee ethical behavior. Managers enforce the code of ethics with employees as well as administer legal or disciplinary action that results from a deviation from the code of ethics. In the financial services industry deviations from compliance may result in a producer and manager getting in serious trouble. Trouble can be anything from fines to arbitration hearings and loss of licenses and registration. Therefore, many employees genuinely try to make a living and build a successful career following the code of ethics. This is a result of the organizational culture at MetLife. Employees and managers must make minimum sales number each year and failing to hit target numbers results in termination. Any major deviation from MetLife’s code of ethics that results a fine or legal action against the company will have the same end. There is a strong acceptance and adherence to the code of ethics. For example during quarterly compliance meetings employees get refresher training on important state and federal tax laws that change often. The effect this has on the organization is a positive one. However, there are exceptions to this as some employees and competitor’s employees just have bad personal ethics and draw negative attention to the industry for bad business practices. A recent example is the Ponzi scheme committed by Bernard Madoff. In one of the worst periods of economic uncertainty Madoff defrauded thousands of investors out of billions of dollars and at the same time planted the seeds of consumer mistrust against individuals working in the financial services industry. Management expects employees to â€Å"do the right thing† for clients. The primary focus for employees is to achieve MetLife’s vision through fair sales practices, excellent customer service, and making suitable recommendations to clients. Employees must adhere to strict corporate compliance monitoring that goes above state and federal regulations. For example an independent insurance agent, non-MetLife, must complete 16 hours of state mandated continuing education classes each year whereas a MetLife agent must comply with state regulations as well as MetLife’s annual continuing education courses. MetLife’s courses are intentionally more in-depth than the material that the state courses cover and emphasize ethics in all business practices. MetLife is proud of the reputation the company has established in the financial services industry and expects employees to operate their personal business with â€Å"the highest standards of conduct in all business endeavors† (MetLife, 2010, p. 7). Managers also follow the same code of conduct and  ethics. And can be held accountable for employee violation of the code of ethics. Management must adhere to strict company guidelines and complete many more continuing education classes that cover a variety of topics; some that employees take as well as many others that focus on corporate compliance regulations. State and federal laws to abide by so MetLife has its own regulations that cover all states and goes beyond any individual state’s laws or regulations. Each employee, manager or producer must complete an annual compliance review and demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and practices covered by the code of ethics. Corporate ethics and compliance managers hold quarterly and annual compliance meetings with all employees to discuss industry incidents and violations that cost other companies and producer’s money, court proceedings, and careers. In the code of ethics there is little space for change to make monitoring employees easier or any individual employee more compliant. In the financial services industry state and federal laws change or are undergo tweaks a little each year. To that end MetLife releases a code of ethics each year that outlines any new practices or changes in the way employees are to do business, always keeping standards consistent with MetLife’s vision. In short, a code of ethics is a necessary tool for management in an organization such as MetLife. All directors, managers, and employees are expected to read the code of ethics and refer to it when making critical decisions. The company keeps employees up to date with compliance meetings and maintains a high standard of compliance monitoring and reviews. However, ethical behavior is not guaranteed simply because these systems are in place or available for review. Managers set the example for employees and set the standard for the employees they supervise. Under the duty-based system in place employees are expected to do the right thing for clients. The company hires from within only the best employees into management positions. This ethical system keeps organization simple while maintaining a strong compliance keeps financial transactions ethical and in line with  MetLife’s vision; to build financial freedom for everyone. Sample Term Paper on Baby Boom A necessary step in scientific speculation is to specify precisely what is to be explained. At the demographic level, we have explained the baby boom mainly as an increase in the proportion of women having at least two children accompanied by a compression of fertility into a shorter, earlier period of time. (Another way of describing the same phenomenon is in terms of a significant decline in the average age of childbearing.) Being married and having a family (though not a large family) had become the norm during the decade after the war. Bachelorhood, childlessness and having only one child became increasingly unusual. What kinds of social change occurred during this period that might help explain this trend? One persuasive theory proposed by economist Richard Easterlin is that the postwar period witnessed a combination of two basic forces which encouraged optimism and relaxed earlier constraints on marriage and having children: an unprecedented demand for goods and services otherwise known as the postwar economic boom; and an accompanying shortage of labor. This shortage was caused by low birthrates in the twenties and early thirties which reduced the number of job seekers two decades or more later. In former periods, this demand for labor was met by immigration but the restrictive legislation of the twenties had effectively dried up this source of labor. Thus young people in the early 1950's were relatively few in number and were faced with many well-paying job opportunities in a rapidly expanding economy a particularly propitious set of circumstances for encouraging the formation of families. Other factors also contributed to what appeared to be a headlong rush into marriage and childbearing. Credit for home purchases and other consumer goods became widely available. With little investment and long amortization schedules it became possible for masses of people to satisfy home ownership aspirations, to escape the city and to have a better place for the kids to grow up. With little or no down payment required, suburban developments mushroomed and young couples with young children moved in, their homogeneous concentrations undoubtedly reinforcing the norm of fertility. Pregnancy and motherhood no longer signified a withdrawal from social life; on the contrary, pregnancy seemed almost fashionable at the time. In the new child-centered suburban life separated physically and psychologically from the work environment -childlessness was the deviant form of behavior. The pressures for conformity were such that sterility was probably a more socially acceptable justification of chi ldlessness than lack of interest in children. His second purpose was that he had to find the Northwest Passage. They left in Spring of 1523. The voyage was sponsored by the king of France and some other welthy people in France. The only person Verrazano knew on the ship was his brother. When he started his voyage he had to go south because they had treaty with Spain to not go into the Atlantic Ocean. They went anyway, but had to go south from the port of Marcielle to not let Spain see them. They landed in the unhabited cove of Porto Santo. Thats where they found food and loaded up the ship and left again. Then they got to the east coast, they made sure they didnt go as south as Florida, where the Spanish ruled. While he was going up the coast he saw indians excited dancing on the beach. He went to the beach and met the indians, and that beach happened to be Kitty Hawk. Schools and Relationship with Childhood Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Schools and Relationship with Childhood - Essay Example This essay "Schools and relationship with childhood" will explore the concept of society as well as the fundamental role education plays in developing the society. In the period 1780-1920, Britain transitioned from the agricultural to the industrial society. This transition introduced new set of challenges to the United Kingdom such as poverty, huge population density, and political concerns. Most assuredly, we can learn much from the past for the sake of improving the present and preparing for the future. Looking at the history of education, we can see that education has played a major role in the development of societies, starting with the ancient Greece. Plato had an idea that we have to educate our leaders to have the development we seek for our societies. His ideas correlate with the ideas of the eighteenth and nineteenth century philosophers for educating the masses in order to solve the encountered in England. This essay will also explore how the need for change in British soc iety influenced education and investigate the changes that applied to childhood. There will be mentioned three examples; Firstly, the `Monitorial School`, which was invented by Joseph Lancaster between 1778 and 1839. This will entail finding out more about the need for creating this school. Secondly, David Stow established the ‘Moral Training System’. Thirdly, we have the ‘Elementary Education Act’. Moreover, paper discusses how these institutions thought of pupils, in comparison with present views of childhood. School as a Solution for the New Social Problems In the years 1780-1920, the United Kingdom was transforming from an agricultural society to an industrial society. Alongside the change, people started to move from the countryside to live in cities. Consequently, new problems appeared in the society especially in the ‘laboring classes’. For instance, in the year 1806, London had witnessed new problems like population density and rise in crime. Hence, political ideas in the nation focused on finding solutions to issues of ‘

Macro3B Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Macro3B - Essay Example The expenditure multiplier is a constant that gives the value (a ratio) to what you will put in the economy and what you will get out of it as a result. It is an increased (multiplied) value because once money comes into the economy; it changes many hands and gradually multiplies. We first need to know the value of the multiplier before determining the amount by which we ought to increase government spending. Multiplier = 1 / MPS We know what the MPC is because MPC + MPS = 1 We can find out the value of MPS that is: 0.8 + MPS = 1 MPS = 1 – 0-.8 MPS = 0.2 Since MPS = 0.2, Multiplier = 1 / MPS Multiplier = 1 / 0.2 Multiplier = 5 At present, the economy lacks behind full employment by $2000 as the full employment level is $10,000 and we are currently at $8,000 (10,000 – 80000), to fulfill this gap, we will not increase government spending by 2000 as that would increase the total output to a large extent owing to the presence of the Expenditure multiplier, therefore we woul d increase it by: 2000 / Multiplier 2000 / 5 = $400 A $400 increase in Government spending would automatically trigger an increase of $2000 in the economy owing to the presence of the multiplier (i.e. 400 * 5 = $2000) Question 2: The other aspect of Fiscal tool that the government has on its disposal is the â€Å"taxes† which it can alter depending on the state of the economy. Since the President has asked me to work on the fiscal measure owing to popular public demand, we can work with it as well. First of all, it is important to understand that taxes are not a direct component of the GDP unlike government expenditure; they influence consumption. Also, tax cuts are feared to be saved to an extent depending on the public’s expectations (example, if there is more employment in the economy, GDP is likely to rise greatly, however, decreases in tax rates might even be saved by the households), therefore, the value of the tax multiplier is less than that of the expenditure multiplier; which means I would have to reduce taxes to a greater extent as compared to government expenditure to get the $2000 increase in GDP. Tax Multiplier: MPC / MPC Since MPC = 0.8 and MPS = 0.2 Tax Multiplier = 0.8 / 0.2 Tax Multiplier = 4 (Which is one less than the expenditure multiplier that was â€Å"5†) For the economy to boost to full employment, tax cuts would have to be given in accordance with the multiplier: 2000 / Tax Multiplier 2000/4 = $500 Therefore, it is evident, for the economy to go to the full employment level of $10,000, tax cuts worth 500 have to be given (which are 100 more than the expenditure if the government were to use that). This makes the government spending policy more attractive as compared to giving tax incentives to people. Question 3: If the president were to match increases in federal government expenditures with the offsetting increases in taxation, it would never give out a balanced budget. It is important to note that because of a leakage i.e. saving, a tax cut never gives out its full multiplier effect; tax cuts affect consumption and are not a direct part of the GDP. On the other hand, government expenditure is direct component of GDP as shown: Taking closer looks at the formula of tax multiplier (i.e. MPC/MPS) and comparing it to the expenditure multiplier, one would realize that the tax multiplier would always be â€Å"1† less than the government expenditure multiplier; therefore equal increases or decreases in both would not give out a balanc
